The Fifth Flavor

I've been wanting to try Umami Burger since it opened in Los Feliz in early October.  There is also a location on La Brea near Olympic - which has been written about extensively - but I was unaware of it until I heard about the new Los Feliz location. I must admit that (sadly) I don't venture to Los Feliz very often, even though it originally was my living destination of choice. Luckily, my friend Sabrina is relocating to that hood so I will be hanging out there much more often! While driving by her new place the other day we stopped at Umami Burger for lunch.  Umami is apparently the fifth taste, which Sabrina and I discussed at length on our walk to the restaurant. While we couldn't quite come to a conclusion on what exactly the fifth taste is, after I had the burger I knew whatever it is, I like it!

We sat outside on the patio / sidewalk which I liked a lot and ordered an ice tea for me and a Coca-Cola (in the bottle!!) for Sabrina.  We split an order of fries with homemade ketchup which was simply delightful.  I love crispy fries with potato-y middles and these fries were exactly that.  After much contemplation we settled on the Port and Stilton Burger (blue cheese, blue cheese, blue cheese!) and the classic Umami Burger.  We split each burger and were overwhelmed by the juicy patties, soft bun, and burst of flavors.  I love blue cheese and caramelized onions so the Port and Stilton was right up my alley.  But the Umami burger was by far the best burger I have had to date. (Sorry 8 oz., but don't worry my heart still belongs to your short rib grilled cheese and tuna melt.)  The Umami delivered an interesting combo of shitake mushroom, roasted tomato, carmelized onions, and a parmesan crisp that had my mouth watering (then and now).

Oh sweet burger, I can't wait to eat you again!

Celeb Sighting

This weekend the stars came out for Katy Perry's big birthday bash.  The party was a wonka themed white party... which apparently turned into a hand painting / splatter paint party.

While the blogs were abuzz about the festivities, I got in on the after party action... well, kinda. While bar-hopping on Cahuenga, my friends and I happen to run into Derek and Julianne Hough from Dancing With the Stars fame (and when I say "run into" I mean we saw them and ran after them).  We proceeded to slightly stalk them until we got close enough to ask for a picture.  My friend Kelly (who was just a tad bit starstruck) just stood next to them without saying anything while another friend held up the camera... after what seemed like a very long awkward pause one of us finally asked them if it was alright to get a picture.  They were very nice about it despite our very awkward approach.  I also think Maksim Chmerkovskiy was next to them and we completly overlooked him. Whoops.

{Derek, Julianne, and Kelly}

I was originally very baffled by Julianne's outfit.  Thinking to myself 'is this really going to be the next trend? I sure hope not because I don't think I can pull that off.' But the next day after catching wind of the Katy Perry paint party through Perez Hilton's non-stop "the party was epic" tweets, it all started to make sense.

Halloween Hayride

In the spirit of Halloween we headed to the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride in Calabasas this weekend and it was a spooky good time! I had a lot of fun, even though the goblins and blood-soaked-chainsaw-carrying-crazy people seemed to pick on me. (Probably because I was huddled in a ball in the middle of the hay.)  While the ride was too dark to get any pictures, I did snap some photos of the mini carnival attractions.

{this is my favorite... he was creepy}

{carnival booths}

{prizes!}

I really wanted to win a prize but unfortunately my skills at throwing ping pong balls into colored pails are pretty bad (despite many games of beer pong in college).  Luckily the guy took pity on me and gave me a ticket anyway.  I got a sweet pumpkin pail.

If you love Farmer's Markets...

Then you'll love this! The Farmer's Kitchen in Hollywood opened this October.  It's a farm-fresh cafe as well as a commercial teaching, processing, and retail kitchen for the sale of prepared foods, value-added products, and farm-fresh produce.

The main purpose of The Farmer's Kitchen is to extend the presence of the Farmer's Market throughout the week by providing urban residents a source of fresh produce and healthy meals made through the joint effort of local farmers and urban chefs and apprentices.

While the hours are incovenient for those of us who are 9 to 5ers. (Tues - Fri 11am - 3pm and Sun 7:30am to 2pm)  You can always escape on your lunchbreak and swing by "The Kitchen" on Selma Ave by the Sunset + Vine complex to pick up some fresh goodies or go online and check out their weekly lunch menu to pick up a crisp salad or seasonal soup! Yummm.

Ghoulish Goodies

Coming up with treat ideas for our Spooky Spectacular Halloween party consumes a good amount of my day. Much to my dismay when I realize it's after three and I have yet to finish (or start for that matter) my work for the day.   But here is what I have so far!

Popcorn pumpkin balls.  I like this recipe the best so far.  But I think I'm gonna use orange sprinkles instead of food coloring and use the candycorns to make a jack-o-latern face on the pumpkin.

[Popcorn Pumpkin Balls]

This amazing looking savory apple tart from a wonderful blog called Heart of Light.  I'll probably buy the pre-made dough from pillsbury or I'm toying with the idea of using phyllo dough, and adding some rosemary and using sharp cheddar cheese.

And I'm loving this Dark and Stormy cocktail from Food Network.

Costuming Up

I love Halloween! And if you check out my blog you'll see that I've been agonizing over what to be for the spookiest and sexiest night of the year.  My roommate is reusing her 50's pin up girl costume from last year (which is too cute for words!), and while I have loved costumes in the past I can't bring myself to repeat.  So when I found the Costuming Up with the Kardashians Halloween costume contest I just knew I had to enter my favorite Halloween costume from two years ago. Can't let a chance to show off a good costume go to waste!

Hoping the Kardashian's pick a pair of magicians to win the contest!

If you think you can compete enter to win on http://www.kimkardashian.celebuzz.com/.  I'm not worried about the competition. (Not because I'm that confident, but because they are picking three winners.) Best of luck!

Twitter Roundup

People who annoy me on Twitter...

1. Tila Tequila (@officialTila).  As if she wasn't already annoying enough on her own, she insists on updating her Twitter nonstop. Literally, NONSTOP.  I had to stop following her.  It's no wonder Twitter recently disabled her account, they were probably sick of her updates as well.  Too bad it's back up and running.
Pros:  If you like so-called sexy pictures her page is the place to be. And she responds to most of her followers.  (I wish I had that kind of time on my hands.)

2. John Mayer (@johncmayer). I find it hard to believe that even the most devoted of John Mayer fans actually think his incessant tweeting on nothing and everything is charming and cute.
Pros: He has toned down the conceited playboy tweets just a bit in recent weeks.

3. CNN Breaking News (@cnnbrk).  Unless breaking news only happens every other day or often not for weeks at all, then I think CNN should either give up on this Twitter account or hire someone who is more, you know, involved in the news. I'm pretty sure breaking news happens more often then they are letting us believe.
Pros: Occasionally they do deliver useful little nuggets like "Sheriff: Colorado 'balloon boy' incident 'hoax' and 'publicity stunt'". I suppose it doesn't really matter that everyone else had already tweeted the same thing hours earlier...

4. Rihanna (@rihanna).  You really created a Twitter account just to tweet "The Wait Is Ova Nov 23 09"??  It's not only shameless promotion, it's also boring!
Pros: We now know when the Rihanna album is coming out... (like that information wouldn't have been released a thousand different ways, anyway).

5. Paula Abdul (@PaulaAbdul). I was hoping for a little more crazy and a little less inspirational when I decided to follow Paula on Twitter. If I wanted to know that "dreams are the touchstones of our character" then I would have bought one of those inspirational calendars from Hallmark.
Pros: I'm proud of Paula for not letting this turn into something like her reality show.

And you can of course follow me (@iplayinla) and I'll try not to annoy you!

Case of the Mondays...

I've come down with a case of the Mondays... argh.  It's probably accentuated by the fact that a spent the majority of my Saturday night working and then spent the rest of my weekend lounging around instead of getting stuff done (which seems to be a theme in my life).  What always makes me feel better when I'm wasting away the hours at my desk thinking about all that needs to get done is to make a quick To Do list for the week.  Here is this week's:

1. Finish Snow Bunny Halloween Costume.  I got this great furry vest from the kids section of Target this weekend.  So now I just need to focus on bunny ears and furry leg warmers!

2. Go for a run at least 3 times this week.  That can't be too hard, right?  Even though it seems to have been impossible for most of this month.

3. Look up a half marathon to run in the next 6 months.  (That will give me motivation to actually do item #2)

4. Clean my room.  The task that seems to never end.

5. And finally, pick up this book:

What's your To Do list for the week?

Sunday Grillin' and chillin'

Grilling some good stuff tonight!

Marinated Salmon, Lobster tails, filet mignon! And we even have some Omaha Steaks' hotdogs as an appetizer.  I'm so excited!

I think I'm going to make grilled vegetables with a balsamic reduction glaze, and sauteed mushrooms to go with the goodies.  And a spring salad with goat cheese, walnuts, and balsamic dressing.

And the Chiefs won their first game of the season! It's a good day! :)

And for dessert Tollhouse cookies, and homemade banana bread.

LA Restaurant Week yummy-ness

Thursday night BF took me to Grace for LA Restaurant week.  It was romantic, cozy, and yummy.

To start I had the roasted beet salad with goat cheese fondue. BF had the pumpkin and sea urchin risotto... it was good but the risotto was a little undercooked... we think (we aren't exactly experts on risotto, though).  For the main course I had salmon with beluga lentils and wild mushrooms.  It was perfect. Crispy skin, moist and flaky fish. BF had scallops on top of risotto. This time the risotto was cooked quite well and the scallops were delish.  Dessert was a doughnut flight and some kind of sticky toffee pudding that resembled more of a flourless chocolate torte with bruleed bananas on top.  Check out the restaurant week menu here. It was also a great place for people  watching despite the dimly lit dining room.  We were two tables away from David Caruso.

Unfortunately he wasn't wearing the sunglasses.

Friday night we ventured to the Dolce Group's Ketchup.  Which I have been wanting to visit for a while... I hate to admit mainly because of The Hills.  It was a complete let down.  Yeah, the fries and Ketchup were good but nothing that I can't get at my favorite burger bar, 8 Oz.  But the fish I ordered was bland and boring.  But my friend did like his chicken.  If you are thinking about taking advantage of restaurant week, I would skip Ketchup.

EAT! EAT! EAT!

As most of you hip LAites alreday know, restaurant week is once again upon us!  This week marks the second week foodies have the oppurtunity to dine on tasty specially priced three-course meals from some of LA's best restaurants.  AND yesterday dineLA announced that they are extending restaurant week for the week of Oct 18th - 23rd! I have been wanting to take advantage of this event for what feels like forever but it always slips by me - not this time!  BF made reservations at Grace for tonight and I'm super excited!

Tomorrow we are hitting up Ketchup before going to see Where the Wild Things Are at the ArcLight.  Sounds like a good night to me!

I urge you not to let LA restaurant week pass you by.  Check out all the great participating restaurants here.

Dinner Parties!

Despite my cramped kitchen, lack of decent cookware, and mismatched tableware, I LOVE to cook and entertain.  I have a cabinet full of spices, and love to peruse cooking websites for hours on end (mainly while at work).  Recently I had a few small dinner parties with my friends, and I can't wait to plan more elaborate ones where I spend the whole day cooking and creating and finally presenting my hard work to all my adoring fans, I mean friends.

Last week, was my first attempt at lasagna.  I opted for spinach lasagna as an attempt to make my meal healthy, which I then completely negated by basically doubling the cheese the recipe calls for.  I looked at a lot of recipes but I found this one from allrecipes.com was my favorite.  I pretty much followed the recipe, but I was very liberal with my cheese and sauce.  Here is the final product! Ta dahhh!

We enjoyed our heaping mounds of lasagna with a nice spinach salad (that my friends provided) and glasses of  chilled riesling wine.  I'm not sure if lasagna and riesling go together, but hey, what the heck!

My second dinner "party" was on a much smaller scale.  My friend and I had been talking about cooking steaks for a long time now and we finally committed to doing it! I googled a few recipes for blue cheese crusted filets, but ended up just kinda taking bits and pieces from each and coming up with my own creation.
Here is the final product:

This is how we got there.  Surprisingly we managed to have everything ready at the same time! Keep in mind, my measurements are for only two steaks. First, preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Then, microwave yams or sweet potatoes for about 2-3 minutes per yam.  Wrap yams in foil with a pat of butter and pop in the oven.  Next boil water to steam baby broccoli.  While water boils, chop about 1/4 cup shallots.  Heat up some olive oil in a pan (just enough to lightly cover the bottom of the pan).  I used a small pan, since I was only making dinner for two. Once oil is heated up add chopped shallots, a teaspoon chopped garlic, and some fresh thyme. Saute untill shallots are softened and slightly carmelized.  Remember to add your broccoli into the steamer once your water has boiled.  After shallots are soft add about 1/2 cup beef broth or vegetable broth (I used vegetable) to the pan.  Stir and scrap up carmelized onion bits.  Then add 1/3 cup port wine and stir.  Bring to a boil and let the mixture reduce by about half, for 5 to 10 minutes. While that reduces, mix in a small bowl: 1/3 cup blue cheese, 1/4 cup or less panko crumbs, and some fresh thyme.  Drizzle with olive oil and stir together.  Set aside. Heat up about a tablespoon olive oil in a pan big enough to fit your steaks.  Salt and pepper the steaks.  Once the oil is heated, Sear steaks each side about 1 to 2 minutes.  Remove steaks from pan and place on baking sheet.  Top with blue cheese mixture.  Put in oven.

[picture shows steaks once they are done]

This is where it gets tricky... timing.  The recipe I was loosely referring to said 4 minutes for medium rare and 6 for medium. I was aiming for medium rare  - but ended up cooking for 4 minutes at 400 degrees, then cranked up the oven to broil and left the steaks in there for another 2 minutes.  The result was medium to medium rare.  While the steaks are in the oven, toast some rosemary sourdough bread with butter.  Add the reduced wine mixture to the pan the steaks were cooked in and mix with olive oil and steak bits left in pan. Throw steamed broccoli into a different pan with a little butter and garlic and lightly saute.  Once the steaks are done assemble all ingredients on plate, topping steaks with wine sauce. Enjoy with some red wine!

I have to say this was one of the best homemade dinners I have ever made! Thanks to all your help Sabrina and for bringing the wine, thyme, and delicious bread!

Halloween Horror

Halloween is quickly approaching and as always one evening in October MUST be dedicated to trekking around an amusement park (perferably not in the rain, unless you really wanna feel the mood) being chased by teens in costumes with chainsaws.  Since I live so close to Universal Studios Hollywood I'm really looking forward to hitting up their Halloween Horror Nights. I also happen to be working on a movie special for Saw VI which just happens to be one of the main themes this year at the amusement park.

Last night I spent a long (and rainy) night at the Saw maze shooting for our special.  It was creepy being in the dark and rain wandering around the unlit maze.  But the creepiest of all was when I jumped into the hospital bed to play a dead corpse for one of our shots.

I'm not quite sure why I look so happy about it!  Can't wait to actually check out the maze for real when there are characters jumping out of dark corners trying to get me!  I'm gonna pick up some discounted tickets on Goldstar and head to the spook spectacular next Thursday! (With my body guard of course.)

Mariachi and Mole Madness!

Last Saturday I ventured to Olvera Street (a personal favorite for a fun time!) with my boyfriend and a friend who were determined to find Mariachi band costumes for Halloween.

We arrived and struggled to find parking.  Little did we know a mole festival was happening that day!  We finally caved and forked over $13 bucks at a lot that had it's "lot full" sign out, but still had one space available. My boyfriend convinced the attendant to take our money and let us in.  The fesitval was loud, packed, and filled with interesting foods.  We walked down the crowded aisle between the overflowing booths and surveyed the delicacies.  Since it was a mole festival, many of the foods were different kinds of mole, which is generally a thick sauce with complex flavors, sometimes even chocolatey.

[vat of mole]

We took in all the intoxicating aromas and walked (or more like pushed) from stand to stand sampling spoonfuls of mole. At the end we came to a place where I decided I simply must make a purchase.

A griddle full of cheesy tortilla-y things made fresh it front of my eyes!  I didn't know what they were, but I HAD to have one.  It was completely worth the 5 bucks that I worried I was overcharged due to my inability to speak Spanish (damn those French classes in High School).

Later I found out the little cheesy miracles are called pupusas which are a Salvadoran food consisting of a hand-made corn biscuit like flatbread and different fillings. Mine was just cheese, but they also one filled with fried pork meat ground to a paste. Yum, I think.

My friend selected the world's largest sandwich as his must have item.

His intention was to take it home and eat it for lunch the next day.  But that didn't work out.  We didn't even make it home before he was digging in.

peace, love, giant sandwiches, and happiness!

Southland gets gunned down

Recently a scene from the show Southland was being filmed at Hollywood and Highland which is right by where I work.  I was stoked because it's always fun to see a place you know on TV, and it reminded me to set my Tivo for a show I'm looking forward to.  Originally, when the show first premiered, I was reluctant to watch because I wasn't sure if I wanted to dedicate my time to a gritty cop drama, but after my friends gave it rave reviews and I started tuning in -  I was hooked.  Apparently I'm in the minority. Either that or NBC is out to get me, because they always cancel my favorite shows - remember American Dreams? Looovvved it. NBC cancelled it.  And today, NBC announced that they are giving Southland the ax because they feel the six episodes yet to be aired are too gritty and dark for primetime.  And because of Leno airing at 10PM EVERYDAY (save us) they didn't feel it would be appropriate for a 9PM airing.  Not meaing to sound like a fifth grader but, LAME.

The show stars Ben McKenzie (of The O.C. fame) and a large cast of very talented actors including, Regina King and Michael Cudlitz

Cudlitz took to his Twitter to express his anger, hurt, and shock at the decision.

Cudlitz urges fans to hound NBC about the decision saying, "Don't go quietly........ People need to know when they f*ck up this big. Saw ep 2.1 ........ Dumb f*ckin people. Lol."  He also tweeted pics from the set...

...and urged followers to "Tell all your followers to add #savesouthland in their tweets. And tell them to give @NBC hell."

I hope it works!  Good luck to Southland! I would love to see it back on the air!

peace, love, TV, and happiness!

Dairy Free Delight

My favorite dessert is carrot cake, which just happens to be my boyfriend's favorite as well. We love a good, moist carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.  I will have carrot cake at any oppurtunity. A while ago my friend brought one over from the farmer's market once and while it looked amazing, it ended up being a crumbly dry mess.  And the frosting! It has to be cream cheese frosting! No white cake frosting gunk. Yuck. My point is, a good carrot cake is hard to come by.  That's why we were so surprised when we tried the carrot cake at Veggie Grill

It's moist and yummy and it's dairy free which makes it's deliciousness all that more remarkable! How can they make the best cream cheese frosting ever with NO dairy?!! I don't know, and honestly, I don't care.  It's the perfect piece of carrot cake!

peace, love, carrot cake, and happiness!

I've got chills...

Halloween is getting closer and closer! And of course the dreaded decision of what costume to wear is looming over my head.  I haven't quite adjusted to the cooler weather, so currently all that comes to mind are costumes that will keep me warm.  Like, maybe a snow bunny?  Boots with fur (cue flo rida)...

fishnets...

and ruffle "shorts"...

big puffy jacket...

and bunny ears!

Pair some sparkly make-up with wavy hair and boom! Snow bunny costume creation!

What do you think?
